STATEMENT FROM SUFFOLK COUNTY AME PRESIDENT DANIEL C. LEVLER ON WHY SEWAGE SYSTEMS ARE MORE EFFECTIVE AND LESS COSTLY TO SUFFOLK COUNTY TAXPAYERS THAN DENITRIFICATION SYSTEMS

“Protecting suffolk county’s ground water is important. Suffolk AME and its  membership do not dispute the need for legislative and administrative initiatives to protect our groundwater. The individual cost and limited effectiveness of denitrification systems weighed against sewer systems is a serious concern and it is our perspective that all residents are best served by public sewers. Denitrification systems costing $20,000 or more will have a limited adoption due to a multitude of factors but most prominent are the personal costs burden to individual taxpayers. Sewer systems can have an  immediate positive environmental impact and limit the costs to  individuals through bonding. Installation and oversight of sewage treatment creates sustainable jobs, as well as a much needed increase to the tax base in order to defray the heavy deficits inherited by this administration. We look forward to having an opportunity to share our understanding of this issue in greater detail with the County.”
